Same Day Implants
Same-day implants, also known as immediate load dental implants, are designed to restore a patient's oral health as swiftly as possible. The general health condition of the patient and the condition of the jawbone (assessed through tomography and X-rays) are key factors in determining eligibility. For suitable candidates, both the placement of the implants and the attachment of a temporary prosthesis can be completed on the same day.
After initial evaluation and planning, which includes precise measurements for the implant and the temporary dental prosthesis, the dental implant is placed in the jawbone. A temporary prosthesis is then attached on the same day to restore basic chewing function during the healing process.
Similar to traditional implant treatments, biocompatible materials like titanium or titanium alloys are used. These materials facilitate osseointegration, the process where the implant fuses with the jawbone.
There’s no defined age limit for same-day implants. However, they are typically not recommended for younger patients whose jawbones are still developing.
The implant procedure is usually performed under local anesthesia, minimizing discomfort during surgery. Some post-operative discomfort may occur but is typically manageable with over-the-counter pain relievers.
Good oral hygiene practices, including routine brushing and flossing, should be maintained. It’s also recommended to limit tobacco and alcohol use prior to the procedure. It’s essential to consult with a qualified dental professional to assess individual suitability for the treatment.
The primary difference lies in the treatment duration. While traditional implant procedures involve a healing period of several months before the final prosthesis can be attached, same-day implants allow for the placement of a temporary tooth on the day of surgery.
Same-day implants require fewer surgical procedures and provide an immediate aesthetic improvement. They promptly fill gaps caused by tooth loss, enabling a natural smile and the restoration of normal chewing function.
Not all patients are suitable for same-day implants; it requires a sufficiently dense and thick jawbone. Additionally, same-day implants can be costlier compared to traditional implant treatments. However, the rapid treatment process makes this approach appealing to many patients.
Yes, same-day implants can be combined with other dental treatments as needed. One such example is tooth extraction, which can be performed on the same day before placing the implant.
